About
The Nuragica Columbine is a critically endangered flowering plant found only in a small region of Sardinia, Italy, making it one of the rarest columbine species in the world. With fewer than a few hundred individuals remaining in the wild, its survival is threatened by its extremely limited range, habitat disturbance, prolonged drought, climate change, and grazing by wild and domestic animals.
Growing on steep limestone cliffs, this delicate plant has adapted to survive in a harsh environment where few other species can thrive. The striking blue-violet flowers of the Nuragica Columbine provide an important source of nectar for native bees and other pollinators, helping support the biodiversity of its unique mountain habitat.
Protecting the Nuragica Columbine not only prevents the loss of a remarkable species, but also helps preserve the fragile ecosystems and rich biodiversity of Sardinia’s limestone cliffs.
