The Livingstone’s Fruit Bat/Fox is a large flying fox found only on the islands of Anjouan and Mohéli in the Comoros. With a wingspan of up to 5 feet, it is one of the largest bats in the region. This species is classified as endangered, primarily due to habitat loss caused by deforestation and agriculture. The loss and fragmentation of native forests reduces the trees these bats depend on for food and roosting.
Livingstone’s Fruit Bats play an important role in their ecosystem by dispersing seeds and pollinating plants, helping forests regenerate and support plant diversity. Their presence helps maintain the balance of the forest ecosystem and supports the plants and animals that share their habitat.
