About
The ‘Akikiki bird, also known as the Kaua’i Creeper, is a small Hawaiian honeycreeper found only on the island of Kaua’i. Once more widespread across the island’s forests, the species has experienced a dramatic decline and is now classified as critically endangered and federally endangered.
One of this species greatest threats is avian malaria, a mosquito-borne disease to which many Hawaiian forest birds have little resistance. Habitat degradation, introduced predators, invasive species, and competition with non-native birds adds further pressure to its already tiny population.
The ‘Akikiki bird is an important part of Kaua’i’s native forest community and protecting it requires the protection of the forests and ecosystems that remain its last refuge.
